Swearing an Oath a Violation of Religious Freedom

Prabjot Wirring Standing

Bottos Law Student-at-LawPrabjot S. Wirring, challenges the law requiring new lawyers to swear allegiance to the Queen as a violation of religious freedom. As an amritdhari (initiated) Sikh, to swear allegiance to anyone other than God would be contrary to his deeply held religious values.

For reasons unknown, Alberta has not kept up with other provinces which allow for lawyers to complete their oath of office without swearing allegiance to a monarch. Not yet out of his articles and Mr. Wirring may be changing the law for good.

We are incredibly proud of him and support his fight for religious freedom.
