Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould has indicated that the Liberal government plans to cut back on the use of mandatory minimum sentences and give more discretion to judges to impose an appropriate sentence.
The lawyers at Bottos Law Group believe very strongly that mandatory minimum sentences are largely unjust, and we should trust experienced and learned trial judges to determine the appropriate sanction for a particular offender. In Canada, we have a tradition of individualized sentencing, where the unique circumstances of the offender and the offence are taken into account in order to provide a just sentence.
